USS Monitor - Gun Tool - Robinson's Worm Wheel

This Robinson's Worm Wheel gun tool was recovered from the USS Monitor turret in 2002. The tool is comprised of a round, copper alloy wheel, and was connected to two sections of wrought iron rod handle and a copper alloy cotter pin (not shown). The tool is now housed at the USS Monitor Center at The Mariners' Museum and Park in Newport News, VA. Because this is data from a 3D scanner, versus the photogrammetric models seen in the rest of this collection, there is no photorealistic texture for this image. Having data like this available means that we can now study the construction and use-life features of the artifact while it remains in an environmentally controlled case. This model is the result of a collaboration between NOAA's Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, The Mariners' Museum and Park, National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and the University of West Florida's Sea 3D Additive Manufacturing Laboratory.
