USS Monitor's Anchor

This unique wrought iron anchor was designed by John Ericsson for the USS Monitor and is the only known surviving example of its type. It was recovered by NOAA off the starboard bow of the shipwreck in 1983 and conserved at East Carolina University. The anchor is now on display at the USS Monitor Center at The Mariners' Museum and Park in Newport News, VA. Because this is data from a 3D scanner, there is no photorealistic texture for this image. Having data like this available means that we can now study the construction and use-life features of the artifact while it remains in an environmentally controlled case. This model is the result of a collaboration between NOAA's Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, The Mariners' Museum and Park, National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and the University of West Florida's Sea 3D Additive Manufacturing Laboratory.
