USS Monitor - Gun Tool - Bore Scraper

This bore scraper was recovered from the turret of USS Monitor in 2002. It was used to clean the bore on one of the ship’s two XI-inch, 13-foot long, Dahlgren guns. A portion of the handle and one half of the scraper is not included in this scan. The scraper is now housed at the USS Monitor Center at The Mariners' Museum and Park in Newport News, VA. Because this is data from a 3D scanner, versus the photogrammetric models seen in the rest of this collection, there is no photorealistic texture for this image. Having data like this available means that we can now study the construction and use-life features of the artifact while it remains in an environmentally controlled case. This model is the result of a collaboration between NOAA's Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, The Mariners' Museum and Park, National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and the University of West Florida's Sea 3D Additive Manufacturing Laboratory.
